Mumbai is built on what was once an archipelago of seven islands. Between 1661 and 1666 the islands were placed in the possession of the English Empire. Over the years of British rule the islands were merged via landfill to become the area known today as Mumbai. India gained independence from Great Britain in 1947; and in 1995 Bombay was returned to its original name of Mumbai named after Goddess Mumba Devi. One of the most popular places to visit is the Gateway of India which was built during the colonial era to commemorate the visit of King George V in 1911. Once representing the grandeur of British Empire, it was also the place from where the last troop of British regiment marched at the time of independence. At night when the streetlights come on it resembles a necklace and is often referred to the Queen's Necklace.
